Safer Spaces Policy
York Creatives as an organisation is committed to helping, connecting, and uplifting York’s Artists. We recognise that there is no such thing as an entirely safe space. However, we believe it is deeply important to foster a community where artists feel welcome, affirmed, and accepted on our platforms and at our events.
We value kindness and respect and those two practices function best when we hold ourselves accountable for our impact on others.
We as the York Creatives Board are dedicated to following the guidelines set out below and ask that anyone attending our events and using our social media forum Circle follow them as well.
Brainstorm of things to add to then be expanded on: (these are direct quotes from other safer spaces policy so maybe looking to reword a bit so it’s not just copying) but a good list of what to include
Zero tolerance policy for abuse and discrimination including, but not limited to, racism, ageism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and prejudice based on ethnicity, nationality, class, gender, gender presentation, language ability, asylum status or religious affiliation.
Be aware of the positions and privileges we bring (including, racial, class, and gender privilege) and how your words, opinions and feelings are influenced and who they might exclude or harm.
Be aware of the different kinds of identities (gender, ethnicity, sexuality, class) that people may identify with and avoid making generalisations or assumptions about people, particularly based on physical characteristics.
Be aware that anyone in our space could have lived experience of any sort of oppression, such as racism, homophobia, misogyny, transphobia or violence.
Respect physical and emotional boundaries, including getting explicit verbal consent before engaging in any physical contact or crossing personal boundaries
